Decisions Decisions

I've been thinking about the nursery a lot lately. Because, as a pregnant woman (17 wks today!) all I can think about is baby stuff!

I am torn between modern and old fashioned. I am really leaning towards the modern. Something about modern nurseries just appeals to me. I know my Mom won't agree (sorry Mummy!) but they just seem so sleek, stylish and more functional for our small space. The nursery is only 8 1/2 x 10 1/2. Not much room. I found some software to design the nursery on a great website. It lets you choose the size of the room, and then insert all the standard items and choose the sizes of everything (crib, changing table, rocker, nightstand, doors, windows, etc). It's awesome and has helped me so much with deciding what should go where.

We're thinking of painting the room a light, cool blue. Possibly doing a sort of Block Island theme. White furniture. Some pics of Block Island on the walls. I always gotta include our favorite place. And hopefully it will be our baby's favorite place one day too : )

So these two cribs are in the running right now. One modern, one not so modern. The top one is way more expensive but oh so sleek. And I really love the fact that you don't have to raise and lower the side as it's a very low crib. I don't like cribs that overwhelm you when you walk in to such a small room either. If we had a bigger room then maybe things would be different. I know it's early and everything, but it's just so much fun doing this and I've waited so long.

OK, as a been there done that I'll just give you some of my thoughts. Not that you would base your decision on it mind you.
The first one is nice, BUUUUT! When you bring your tiny baby home, youll be amazed at how TEENY tiny the baby is in the big crib.
For months, the baby will be falling asleep in your arms and you have to slowly put the sleeping baby in the crib hoping not to wake him/her up. That's what makes the ones with the higher beginning stage nice. Not to mention the fact that most babies (obviously not newborns, but a couple months old) LOVE mobiles, but their vision isn't so hot. You might not get the fun baby freakout at the mobile if he/she is so low.
On the plus side, it doesn't look as though as your child gets old that he/she'd be able to easily crawl out of the first one. THAT is nice!!
Good luck with your decision!!!
Do you know that you can almost probably see what sex you're having SOON!!!
YAY!!
You're belly is beautiful! Take LOTS of pictures of it!

Well I should've noted that we are going to get the Arm's Reach Mini Co-Sleeper to put next to our bed for the first couple of months. No way do I wanna be getting up and going to another room to nurse every couple of hours. So the crib probably won't be used right away. But still, decorating is so much fun!

Oh, and we won't be finding out the sex of the baby. So we have to decorate in a unisex way.

I was going to say the exact same thing as Jennifer. I couldn't tell from the picture - whether or not the first crib has this functionality - but it really helps to have a crib with multiple height stages for the mattress. Even after the newborn stage, it's just a lot easier to gently put a baby down to bed when the mattress is within an arm's reach. But if you're going to have a co-sleeper, it's totally feasible to use the co-sleeper until your baby is big enough for the bottom-most height setting anyway (which I think for Isabelle was around 9 months, when she started standing?), and then you're golden! The mobile point is a good one too - is the co-sleeper sturdy enough to put a mobile on?

The Oeuf crib has 3 adjustable mattress heights, and also turn into a toddler bed when the time comes. It also has an optional changing table which you can place on top of the crib, but I don't think I'd go that route.

The Arm's Reach bassinet has one open side that unzips and hangs down so you can literally reach over from your bed to nurse the baby. The bassinet also has an additional (sold seperately)canopy with an attached mobile.

I always like sleek, modern, efficient and above all, space saving, but the top one looks too much like a cage for baby sheep. And it's so deep. Won't you hurt your back by bending over so far? Can you adjust the height of the bed so that it can start higher and as the baby grows, you can lower it. I dunno, but it does look veally, veally nice.

The mattress does adjust to different levels, but yes, I would have to bend down a little more. But is that really a big deal? I dunno.

Take a look

Different height mattresses is nice. I like all the matching furniture. That toddler bed is cool. Perfect for Sofia when she stays over. DO THIS! Your place is not old fashioned. I think you should design an open, visually uncluttered space. It'll be peaceful for you and baby Henry.

Oh, great! If the mattress height is adjustable, then the only real decision is aesthetic. :) And I suppose price. :P

I don't know if bending down more is a big deal or not. Is there a store where you can physically see each crib? It might help to stand next to it to get a feel for whether or not it's too low or whatever.

By the way, I love the Block Island theme idea!

Yeah there is actually a store right across the street from us that sells baby furniture! What luck! I have seen it and will go take another look.

I don't plan on getting any of this stuff until Feb or so. Just dreaming right now : )

"Cage for baby sheep"! That made me choke on my latte. I liked that first one too, now it seems baaaaaad. Babies should be cage-free.

No wait. I like it anyway.

I agree with henry—modern, sleek is good but this one looks like a prison for baby. Baby Oz?

What about a little weaved basket like the one they put Moses in in the Ten Commandments?

They do actually sell Moses baskets but that'll only last a couple of months. Then what? Send him/her down the river?
